What the UK sponsor list is

The 'Register of licensed sponsors: workers' is the official Home Office publication of every UK organisation authorised to sponsor a Skilled Worker (or Temporary Worker) visa. It's updated regularly and published as a downloadable spreadsheet on gov.uk.

The raw register is over 100,000 rows of company names, licence ratings and visa categories. It's accurate, but it's not designed for job seekers. ResumeSpark Stay enriches it with industry tagging, location normalisation and matching to live job adverts.

How to use the list strategically

Don't apply to every sponsor — there are too many. Instead, build a target list of 30–50 employers that match your sector, your seniority and your salary expectations.

Prioritise A-rated sponsors (the standard rating) that have issued Certificates of Sponsorship recently. Smaller scale-ups often face less competition than household-name FTSE 100 firms. Tech, healthcare, engineering, finance and academia have the densest sponsor coverage.

What 'licensed' actually means

A sponsor licence gives an employer the legal ability to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship — it doesn't compel them to. Some licensed sponsors sponsor heavily; others hold the licence for a handful of senior roles per year.

Use the sponsor list as a filter, not a guarantee. Combine it with sponsorship-likelihood scoring on individual job adverts to focus on roles where sponsorship is actually on the table.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?
The official Register of licensed sponsors published by the UK Home Office on gov.uk. We re-sync regularly so listings reflect current licence status.
What does 'A-rated' mean?
A-rated is the standard sponsor licence rating — the employer is in good standing with the Home Office and can issue Certificates of Sponsorship. B-rated sponsors have restrictions and are working on an action plan.
If a company is on the list, will they sponsor me?
Not automatically. The licence gives them the ability; the decision to sponsor any specific candidate is theirs (and the Home Office's). Always check the individual job advert for explicit sponsorship intent.
